Church of San Nicolò

The church of St. Nicholas is the main religious building of the city of Eupen, an important center of the German-speaking community of Belgium, built in the eighteenth century where previously stood a fifteenth-century Gothic church.

A document dated 1213 mentions a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari in Eupen, which between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries was replaced by a Gothic-style church. The wealthy cloth merchants of Eupen, however, considered this church inadequate to their flourishing socio-economic status: between 1720 and 1726 a new church was built, replacing the previous one, designed by the architect Laurent Mefferdatis. This new church was consecrated in 1729.
