In the 14th century, Duke John II wanted to thank the lierenaars for their services during his battle against the Malinois. They could choose their own reward: a cattle market or a university. They opted for the stacking right on cattle, a choice that did not bother Lier, because only one was allowed per region. So the cattle market moved from Wespelaar to Lier and the duke sighed: "Oh, those sheep's heads". This is how the mocking name 'sheep's heads' was created for the inhabitants of Lier.
