The Wilderbos probably owes its name to a farm called ‘t Hof ter Wilst, which was already mentioned in the 13th century. This farm was surrounded by small forests, including the Wydelsbosch. Most of those forests date back to the 16th century. Previously, the forest belonged to the Carthusians of Scheut and was used as a stone quarry. Given the poor state of the quarry, the site was forested around 1515.
This forest is very hilly, and the sources of the Parucqbeek spring from the foot of the site. This waterway flowed into the Molenbeek at the Hunderenveld.
The park was taken over by Leefmilieu Brussel in 1993. In 2019, the pond and the wetlands downstream were restored. As part of those works, numerous springs and small water bodies were identified, and the ditches feeding the pond were cleaned. Furthermore, together with the municipality, it was investigated how the water from the cemetery can be redirected to the park. The hydraulic installations (installation of dams, ...) have also been re-evaluated to retain as much water in the park as possible.
