Pölberger mill

The mill on the top of the Poelberg is a stilt mill (West Flemish for stilt) with an open base, the blades of which are about 24 meters long . This is the oldest wooden windmill type in the Netherlands (11th century in Sint-Denijs-Westrem). This mill can be turned in the wind with its tail .

Various dates can be found at various points on the mill, including 1726, 1792 and 1844. For a long time, 1726 was erroneously suggested as the year of construction. The Poelbergmühle was founded between 1645 and 1668. It is mentioned in 1668 as "eenen coorenwintmeulen op de Poelberch". The harp iron in the front mill is dated 1631, but it is quite possible that this forging spindle came from a different mill.

The mill was operated by wind until 1964 , then by electric motor until 1970 , it fell into disrepair and was bought by the city of Tielt in the 80s, restored and made ready for grinding again.

The mill often runs on Sunday afternoons (2022) . There are heritage days and special mill days when many (West) Flemish mills are in operation. ( Patrimonio del Molí – De Molenbrigade ). More than 20 wind turbines are active in West Flanders.
