House on the exchange - Bruges

The Huis Ter Beurze used to be part of the Oude Beursplein , together with the Saaihalle (today the fries museum) and the Florentine lodge. The former square is now part of the Vlamingstraat.

In the late Middle Ages, this was the financial center of the city. The square is named after the Van der Buerse family.
The view of the square at that time is known thanks to a plate from Flandria Illustrata by Antonius Sanderus (1641).

From the 14th century, the custom had arisen among Italian and other merchants to gather here for trade.

The stock exchange took place on the square itself and not in a building, but several houses on the square had canopies where shelter could be sought from the weather. Business on the square was tightly controlled. Trade was opened and closed at the chime.
