You also walk up to the Abeek, where you have a view of the Mariahof - De Luysen nature reserve. Did you know that Smeetshof, together with the Dutch Wijffelterbroek, used to be part of a 5,000-hectare border marsh? The landscape was extensively developed at the end of the last century. In 2003, restoration of the marsh began. The Smeetshof nature management project created new marsh areas, heath restoration, ponds with amphibians, and wet and dry grasslands with scattered bushes. Viewing points, birdwatching hides, and boardwalks offer you a unique glimpse into this surprising piece of KempenBroek. You walk between Belgium and the Netherlands, amidst forests, marshes, meadows, and streams.
