The Mombeek forms the winding border between Alken and Hasselt. At the lowest point of the valley, the old Mombeek flows parallel to its bigger brother. The wetter nature of this valley has historically made it difficult to access. Houses could not be built there, and modern agriculture also left the valley as it was. Today, it is a blue-green oasis in the fertile Haspengouw arable and meadow landscape.
