This beautiful square in the center of Seville's old quarter, which takes its name from the Museum of Fine Arts located there, has its main facade on the west side of the square.
Until 1840, the Monastery of Meced was located on this square and when part of it was demolished, the architect Balbino Marrón designed the square with the gardens and the central rotunda where now stands the monument to Murillo , the work of the sculptor Sabino de Medina from the year 1864. On the pedestal of the statue we see a figure of the painter with a brush in his right hand and a column in his left hand.
Initially called Plaza or Gardens of La Merced (after the monastery that once stood on the site), it was later called Alameda and Plaza del Museo, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was renamed Plaza del Conde de Casa Galindo, and from 1931 to the present day it is called Plaza del Museo.
