Piazza della repubblica - Alcamo

Its origins date back to the mid-14th century when it was born as a parade ground for military exercises at the nearby castle. The only building that existed at the time was the Church of Santa Maria di Gesù and the Monastery of the Friars Minor to the south of it, while only small rural buildings stood on the sides of the square.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the castle was transferred to the municipality by the last counts of Modica and as a result the square no longer served the purpose for which it was constructed. Later the municipal council installed a watering hole on the square. From 1922 to 1946, the square was used as a football field , as it was the only large space available for football activities.

In the 1960s it was paved and the bus station with the two shelters was built. Today, the Piazza della Repubblica has a square shape: on the north side the profile of the castle of the Counts of Modica dominates, while the entire remaining part is occupied by residences, shops and offices.
