Icaro caduto - Agrigento

This contemporary sculpture "Icaro Caduto" is inspired by the myth of the fall of Icarus from Greek mythology and depicts the image of Icarus falling from the sky.

The artwork was created by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj and is one of many modern art installations found in and around the Valley of the Temples . The statue of Icarus contrasts with the ancient Greek temples and reminds visitors of the rich mythology and history that surrounds Agrigento.

In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of Daedalus, a famous inventor and architect. They were captured in Crete and tried to escape by making wings out of feathers and wax, which were joined together with wax. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun because the wax would melt. Icarus ignored this warning and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax to melt and him to fall into the sea and drown.
