It is a peat colony, established at the end of the 19th century at Middenraai. Due to small-scale new construction, it has gained its own village center. Part of the village center is formed by bungalow park De Breistroeken. The village has a Dutch Reformed church and a Christian Reformed church. In addition, there are sports fields for the football club SV Nieuw Balinge, numerous associations, and a public primary school.
The new timetable for the bus transport of Qbuzz will take effect on Sunday, December 11, 2022. This means that from that date, Line 37 between Hoogeveen and Westerbork will be discontinued. The villages of Balinge, Mantinge, and Nieuw Balinge are now left without public transport.
