Orange-Nassau II

The Oranje-Nassau II opens its doors in 1904. The mine is still called 'Mijn Carl', after the mine operator Carl Honigmann from Aachen. Together with his brother Friedrich and the Dutch railway builder Henri Sarolea, he is the founder of the Oranje-Nassau mines.
This mining company builds the first miners' colonies in the region, including the Eikske and Leenhof. The Oranje-Nassau II is also popularly called 'Os Küültsje'. The mine has two shafts.
The deepest point is 477 meters below ground level. Over the years, the mining site grows into a large business complex where
thousands of people find work. In the end, the total mine site covers an area of approximately 32 hectares.
Until its closure in 1971, the Oranje-Nassau II produced more than 36,000,000 tons of coal. In addition, 12,000,000 tons of mining stone are brought to the surface. It accumulates into large mine rock mountains east of the mine.
After the closure of the Oranje-Nassau II, these were excavated. On the remaining plain is now the Pinkpop site and family park Mondo Verde. In the 80s, a new housing estate was built on the former mine site.
