War memorial Liessel

The 'Battle of the Shadow', described by A. Korthals Altes in the book of the same name, took place in the territory of the municipalities of Asten, Deurne, Nederweert, and (at the time) Meijel. After the 7th US Armored Division had held out against a German superior force, it was up to the 15th Scottish Division to work alongside the Americans to clear the rural area of German soldiers. In those battles, many hundreds of soldiers lost their lives. The church villages of Deurne, Liessel, and Neerkant also mourned dozens of civilian casualties. In 1992, this dignified monument was erected in Liessel for all war victims.
