Descripción por el autor

This gravel route combines three beautiful gravel areas: the Maasheggen (UNESCO World Heritage site) and floodplains of the Maas, the Reichswald, and the Rijk van Nijmegen (including the Mookerheide), and finally the Maasduinen (northern part). The starting point is from the parking lot at the lock complex of Sambeek, and the route goes clockwise. Almost 62% of the route is on gravel roads. The Maas is crossed twice: via the Maas Bridge at Gennep and via the ferry Afferden - Sambeek.

You first cycle through the Maasheggen: an area where plots and roads are separated by woven hedges. The gravel roads in this area are also used by agricultural traffic, and therefore may be in worse condition after rainy periods combined with intensive agricultural traffic. You then cross the Maas via the Maas Bridge at Gennep. After a short passage through Gennep, you cycle through the basin of the Niers over gravel bike paths and partly gravel roads along the nature reserve Achterbroek and the floodplains of the Maas.

After a short passage through Mook, you climb over a gravel path with some loose gravel to the top of the Mookerheide (wider tires are handy here under dry conditions). At the top, you have a beautiful view over the Mookerheide. You continue cycling on gravel roads through the forests between Mook and Groesbeek. Then you cycle towards the Reichswald, with a few intervening gravel roads.

Once you arrive in the German Grafwegen, you dive into the Reichswald. First, you tackle the climb of the Jan, partly gravel and partly good forest road (you also need to pass through a gate). You then cycle over a quiet asphalt road (Kartenspielerweg) through the Reichswald before turning left and continuing your way through the Reichswald on gravel roads. You climb the Beginnenberg, partly gravel, partly asphalt (this also applies to the descent). In the descent, you must go through a gate. You then pass through the village of Frasselt to another part of the Reichswald (you must again pass through a gate). Now follow gravel roads as you climb the Geldenberg (a piece of this is asphalt). After kilometers of straight gravel roads, you leave the Reichswald at the height of the German village Kessel.

Now, mainly asphalt roads follow until you reach Hommersum and ride on the Boxteler Bahn: a gravel bike path over a former railway line. You then cycle to the northern part of the Maasduinen, passing former river dunes (with heath) at the nature reserve Berger Bos (with heath remnants the Quin). Then you cycle to Afferden, where you pass a hospitality location (after 66 km from the starting point at the lock complex Sambeek). After that, the route goes east and you cycle along the Afferdense Duinen. You then cycle past the castle ruins of Bleyenbeek and over gravel roads towards the Maas. You cross the Maas via the ferry Afferden - Sambeek, and finally, there are long stretches of gravel roads in the Maasheggen around the Groeningse and Vortumse Bergen (these are former river dunes).

The route can be shortened by 11 km by directly crossing to the Maas in Afferden (the passage along the Afferdense Duinen and castle ruins of Bleyenbeek will be omitted). The share of gravel roads then amounts to 57%.
