Wild Faial - eMTB adventure from Horta to Caldeira and Capelinhos

The climb to the Caldeira The first part of the route takes you steeply up along paved roads to the Caldeira, an imposing volcanic crater 2 kilometers in diameter and 400 meters deep. The crater is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers a spectacular view – if the clouds aren't too low. Be sure to take the time to enjoy the panoramic view of the island and the Atlantic Ocean.

Adventurous descent to Capelinhos After the climb follows an exciting descent along narrow farm paths towards Capelinhos, the western end of Faial. This area is famous for its volcanic landscape, formed by the eruption of 1957-1958, which expanded the island by 2.4 km². Be sure to visit the lighthouse of Capelinhos, from where you now have a breathtaking view of the rugged, moon-like landscape and the ocean. The volcano museum here tells the story of the eruption and its impact on the local population.

Return to Horta The return journey begins with a stretch over unpaved paths. Once back on the paved road, you can quickly bike back to Horta. In the last part, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take a refreshing dip in one of the natural swimming spots among the rocks – a perfect way to end this unforgettable trip!

Tip: Bring enough water and snacks, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. The combination of challenging climbs, breathtaking views, and the unique volcanic landscapes makes this eMTB trip an absolute must-do in Faial!
