The village of Mannekensvere had a medieval church until 1860. At that time, however, it was demolished and replaced by a neo-Gothic hall church. This was destroyed during World War I. After this, the current church was built by architect Raison, who was allowed to 'redesign' numerous buildings that had been destroyed during the war through his collaboration with Baron Ronse.
Initially, there must have been a Marian chapel here, founded by the Templars. Unfortunately, no trace of this can be found today.
The Bruggesteenweg was already established as a road in 1777, and from then on it was the main land connection between Nieuwpoort, Gistel, and Bruges.
The current church is relatively small and has a low spire. In the interior, the space appears larger than one would expect due to the very wide arches between the nave and the side aisles. The stained-glass windows in the choir are in honor of the patron saint of the church and depict the Assumption of Mary. She is presented on clouds and accompanied by musical angels.
