Motte den Dulft

Motte den Dulft is a motte in Bornem. It is located on Kloosterstraat, near the Sint-Bernardus Abbey.
The history of this motte possibly dates back to the Gallo-Roman period or the Frankish era. The current motte is a remnant of a former moated complex that was part of a broader defensive system of Bornem. There used to be a donjon on it, along with a residence. The donjon was demolished in 1737, and the remaining buildings were burned down in 1798 during the Peasants' War. Only the original hill remains. All other elements are of later date. The current tower was erected in 1802. It is built of sandstone, with a small brick stair tower and is 12m high. According to a cadastral map from around 1860, it was built as an observatory. Shrubs and trees grow on the hill, making the tower difficult to see. The domain is not accessible to visitors.
