The museum is the last home and studio of the great Flemish expressionist Gust De Smet (1877-1943). Together with Constant Permeke and Frits Van den Berghe, he stood at the cradle of this movement and left his mark on art history.
The house, protected since 2007, is now located in a residential area and was transferred with accessories by will by Mrs. De Smet to the municipality of Deurle in 1948, according to the express wishes of her husband. After the artist's death, the municipality was obliged to open the house to the public. The solemn opening took place on June 11, 1950. The museum was reopened in 2016 after a thorough renovation.
The museum contains the fully furnished living room, the studio and the bedroom on the first floor . The works of art on the top floor are presented thematically and per period. In addition, the cupboards and chests of drawers were set up as a mini depot. The archive documents, personal library and utensils shed interesting light on the artist's life.
The museum is located on various walking and cycling routes and is an attraction for passers-by, tourists and other enthusiasts.
