The duchy of Brabant, the county of Flanders, the city of Brussels and the county of Hainaut… many borders ran through the Pajottenland and the Zenne valley at that time. To defend those borders and to fight off skirmishes, dukes, counts, and lords built impressive castles from the clods of earth. From the 16th and 17th centuries, they lost their strategic importance and were converted into pleasure palaces: beautiful and stylish country retreats for the nobility.
This route takes you past a number of magnificent examples via the junctions.
