The Turnhouts Vennen area is one of the most valuable heathlands in Flanders and is important on a European scale. Thanks to the shallow clay layers, the natural plots remain moist long enough. As a result, endangered species such as the black-tailed godwit, curlew, lapwing, numerous dragonflies, colorful butterflies and plants such as the spotted orchid, which are bound to heath-rich grasslands, can be found here. No surprise that precisely these biotopes were part of two unique European LIFE nature projects.
