Burgholztunnel

The Burgholz tunnel is a road tunnel in the area of the city of Wuppertal. The tunnel connects the state road 418 from the Theishahner Kreuz located in the north of the Cronenberg borough to the Sonnborner Kreuz, thus enabling a direct and continuous expressway connection between the A 1 and the A 46 over the southern heights of Wuppertal. The tunnel runs through the Burgholz state forest and was opened on March 29, 2006, as the longest road tunnel in North Rhine-Westphalia at that time. The breakthrough of the two respectively two-lane tunnel tubes, 1865 and 1787 meters long, was already achieved in 2003.
The reason for the construction of the tunnel was the following traffic problem: The A 46 crosses the northern part of Wuppertal and then leads significantly further north to the A 1, which runs east of Wuppertal. For traffic heading south towards the A 1, this meant a significant detour. As a result, this traffic largely moved through Wuppertal within the city. Additionally, there was a lack of an efficient connection between the southern districts such as Vohwinkel with Cronenberg, Hahnerberg, and Ronsdorf, as well as to the city of Remscheid. This problem was intended to be solved by the L 418, which tangentially runs south of the city and was first planned in 1962.
