This city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours described in Day trips in central Andalusia: Cádiz - Jerez-de-la-frontera - Pueblos-Blancos - Córdoba - Granada
The intention is to combine both the old town and sights beyond in one walk.
Because it can be quite warm in the afternoon in the blazing sun, the walk starts along the boulevards on the coast , where there is less shade . In the second part, the city center is visited where there is plenty of shade in the alleys, parks and churches. In this way we first get a view of the amazing size of the city and especially the harbour.
Start at the cheapest car park in Cádiz: Parking Muelle Reina Sofia, Paseo Almte. Pascual Pery (2022: €6.3 for 6 hours).
Along the traffic-free seafront promenade we pass the Baluarte de San Carlos and the Jardines de la Alameda Hermanas Carvia Bernal with its many statues and peculiar ficus trees and the Iglesia del Carmen to the Baluarte de la Candelaria. A little further, the Parque Genovés is definitely worth it. We arrive at the Castillo de Santa Catalina and pass the hip beach 'las Caleta'.
We continue along the boulevzard until the isthmus Paseo Fernando Quiñones, the Baluarte de los Martires and the Baluarte de Capuchinos. At the Iglesia de Capuchinos we dive into the old city center to reach the cathedral through some churches, the Tavira tower , the central market and the flower market.
There are quite a few places of interest in the area, including a recently discovered Teatro Romano. Past some monumental buildings, including the town hall, we arrive at the Puerta de Tierra on the Plaza de la Constitución, the farthest point of the walk.
We return past the old barracks Antiguo Cuartel de Santa Elena and the neighborhood of the Real Fábrica de Tabacos , the old tobacco factory, until the beautiful plaza de San Juan de Dioz. Through a city park on the harbor it goes to the gardens of the Plaza Candelaria , the Oratories de la Santa Cueva and the church of San-Antonio on the plaza of the same name which was almost demolished in 1971, we arrive at the Plaza de Mina.
Continue to the Plaza de España with the Monumento a la Constitución . Through the Jardines de la Plaza de las Tortugas and a piece of Murallas de San Carlos we return to the starting point.
Be sure to consult the information about the sights once you are on site . They explain what you will see!
