In front of the former hospital of Santa Maria and separated from the cathedral by the chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in 1493 to replace the old one that was in danger of ruin, as evidenced by the inscription on the base of the tower. A similar bell tower built at the time of Cardinal Giovanni dei Medici in 1482 to a design by Sansovino is in Bolsena in the sanctuary of Saints Giorgio and Cristina: it is likely that the Volterrans asked for the design for their bell tower along with the commission of the baptismal font that is in the baptistery and that Sansovino was definitely performed in 1502 as we read in the same source.
