Chiesa di San Giorgio dei Genovesi - Palermo

The church was built in 1576 to replace the existing church of Saint Luke, which belonged to a brotherhood of Genoese.

The very simple facade is made of bluestone, with inlaid motifs and pre-Baroque accents in the two upper volutes, in the circumferential volutes of the egg-shaped oculus and in the frieze under the cornice. On the outside, shapes and styles of Tuscan origin predominate.

The interior has a rectangular plan with three naves and on each side there are four chapels enclosed by beautiful and elegant shrines sculpted with Renaissance motifs. At the intersection between the transept and the choir, the interior space takes on a special dynamic force: pairs of columns placed one above the other are intended here to give more meaning to the structural organism of the choir head and support the octagonal tiburium. From this the bowl-shaped dome develops, supported by spherical pendentives.

Of great interest is the floor, which is almost completely covered with tombstones from the 16th and 17th centuries
