Salvesen Gorge

A wonderful destination for hikers of all ages, the Salvesenbach river in Tarrenz puts on quite a show as it tumbles and froths over rapids and beneath ledges. This five-kilometre-long, family-friendly walking trail winds its way through the deep gorge that has been carved into the rock by the rushing wild creek and past many eye-catching geological formations. This trail can be combined with nearby Bewitched Children’s Trail, which is a treat for kids. Limestone formations welcome visitors at the entrance to the gorge, while in the riverbed you will find rock deposits from many different geological periods. The highlight, however, is without a doubt the 40-metre-high bridge traversing a huge crack in the rock as the river rushes below. Don't forget to check out the sculpture park along the way.
From the parish church in Tarrenz, follow the "Hexenlehrpfad" (an educational trail on the theme of witches) across the gorge until you reach the small bridge at “Hoher Übergang“. Walking past Upper and Lower Rotanger, the loop will bring you back to Tarrenz and takes about two hours to complete. The trail is rated easy and follows forest roads and hiking trails and a footpath through the gorge. We recommend sturdy footwear.
