St. Vitus Church

The Protestant St. Veits Church today is located in the town center of Stetten in Remstal, a district of Kernen im Remstal in the Rems-Murr district of Baden-Württemberg. In the immediate vicinity of the church are the Protestant community center, the old town hall of Stetten, and St. Pierre Square.

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1349. It was founded as a Marian church by the treasurers Wilhelm and Count of Stetten. In 1473, a 33-meter-high bell tower was added. In 1488, Hans von Stetten donated a Gothic wing altar to the church, which is currently on display at the Württemberg State Museum. In the same year, the Lords of Stetten consecrated the church to their family patron St. Veit. In 1698, under the dowager duchess Magdalena Sybille, Duchess of Württemberg and regent for her minor son Eberhard Ludwig from 1677 to 1693, the church was demolished, except for the bell tower, and rebuilt in double size as a transept church without a choir, by master builder Matthias Weiß, who had already added a cross-oriented chapel in the castle of Stetten in the Dürnitz on the duke's commission 19 years earlier.
