St. Mary's Monastery

Around 939, a convent for sanctimonials was founded in Gandersheim. Bishop Diethard consecrated the newly built church in 939. Therefore, the patron saint of the Diocese of Hildesheim, Maria, was elected for the patron saint. After a fire raged in Gandersheim Abbey in 973, the abbess of Gerberga II Abbey converted the convent into a monastery for Benedictine nuns as the monastery's own monastery after reconstruction. The consecration of the church was delayed because of the Gandersheim dispute and was carried out in 1007 by Bruno of Augsburg.

The equipment mainly included estates in the northwestern foothills of the Harz Mountains, such as Bornhausen, Echte, Förste, Mackenrode and Oldendorf, as well as Gerberga II's own estates in and near Sonderhofen. The latter were handed over to the newly founded Archbishopric of Bamberg under Henry II in the course of a rounding off with the Gandersheim Abbey, whereby the Marienkloster received the Estates of Derenburg and some places that are now deserted.
