Its striking silhouette resembles many other rural churches in the Champagne region: the transept and choir are much larger and higher than the nave. Built in the 12th century, the Romanesque nave is topped by a bell tower and preceded by a wooden porch. The choir and transept were rebuilt in the 16th century in a Gothic style whose brightness contrasts with the modesty of the medieval nave.
It's inside that the church really comes into its own: the 16th-century furnishings are quite simply exceptional. First and foremost is the typically Renaissance altarpiece: its polychrome sculptures illustrate the Passion of Christ and feature over 50 figures. Comprising 3 panels separated by twin columns, the altarpiece is framed at the top by an entablature with gilded cornice supported by Corinthian capitals, and at the bottom by a predella depicting Jesus and his 12 apostles. Left: the carrying of the cross. In the center, the crucifixion is brought to life by a swarm of figures in relief, the impression of movement creating real emotion. And on the right, during the Resurrection, Jesus seems to emerge from the painting in a graceful gesture.
Secondly, the Eucharistic Tower, with its Gothic architecture, is exceptional in its size: 3.75 m tall. Carved in stone, this piece of furniture is very rare in churches: the ciborium housing the hosts is usually stored in a tabernacle on the altar. The church is also home to a number of 16th-century statues, including a Saint Peter and an Education à la Vierge with Saint Anne.
Although the church suffered during the Second World War, some 16th-century stained glass windows have been preserved in the apse. They are listed as Historic Monuments, as is the Renaissance furniture.
The Saint Paul-Saint Pierre church is usually closed, but a gate allows visitors to observe the interior:
- During events organized by the Géraudot Patrimoine association, which is working to preserve the church
- On request: keys are available from the town hall (03 25 41 26 12)
