Frederiksplein is a square in Amsterdam-Centrum. It is located in line with Utrechtsestraat, between Weteringschans and Sarphatistraat.
Frederiksplein was created after the construction of the Grachtengordel. On the bank of the Singelgracht stood the 17th-century Utrechtsepoort here until around 1850. The square is named after Prince Frederick William Charles (1797-1881), brother of King William II.
The Palace for Popular Welfare, designed by Cornelis Outshoorn, was built between 1855 and 1864. The large building with a lot of glass was inspired by the Crystal Palace built for the London World's Fair in 1851.
On the night of April 18 to 19, 1929, the Palace for Popular Welfare was destroyed by fire. The gallery was partially spared. The gallery housed residences and shops, as well as a hall that was later rented by the association Wie Eegie Sanie after the war. Circus Elleboog was also located in the gallery. In 1960, the gallery was demolished to make way for the building of De Nederlandsche Bank.
In 1939, the exhibition 'The Train 1839-1939' was held at the site of the burned Palace on the occasion of the centenary of the Dutch Railways.
On the Singelgracht, between Oosteinde and Westeinde and opposite a fountain with parks on either side, stands the headquarters of De Nederlandsche Bank (mailing address Westeinde 1), completed in 1968, designed by Marius Duintjer in 1960. The building stands on the site of the Palace for Popular Welfare, which burned down in 1929.
