Scheldt-Rhine Canal

From the Zoutedijk you have a good view of the beginning of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal. It was built in 1975 and starts at Zandvliet from the Kanaaldok in a northerly direction. It is a sailing route that connects Antwerp with Rotterdam. The canal was built at the request of Belgium and Germany, but it took decades before the works actually started. Since 1980, the route has been tide-free thanks to two locks. In addition to its economic value, the canal also has an impact on the open landscape. It is a striking element, along which many cyclists experience the vastness of the polders. Despite the hard banks, there are often a lot of water birds that linger on the water. Examples are coots and mallards.
