The village square. Modern living with a view of the church.

On the other side of the Dorpsstraat, a new construction project for residential units was realized a few years ago. The whole is a design by the architectural firm ARCHITEAM. It encloses a moody square. With larger events in mind, the square was designed to be as flat as possible and the benches were made movable. In the centre, a dike pattern of clay pavers was provided as a link between the visual view under the buildings to the greenery behind and between the village centre with its church.

The brick manufacturer Wienerberger used a palette of clay pavers that give the square visual life through the combination of different colours. On the other hand, the colours were combined with the already existing surroundings: red colour of the bricks of the surrounding new building (Begijn residence and Dijk residence) on the square and on the other hand the brown colour of the old church.

The clay pavers are also a nod to the former brickyards of Betekom. A fountain in the central part adds a playful element to the design. The fountain was also kept flat so that the square can be fully used for events. And that also meant that green planting was shifted to the edges of the square. The library was moved here from the old school and is a place of meeting and creativity.
