Aldeneik - red - 14.2 km

The red wall loop is the longest and most complete walk in this hiking area. Here you combine the floodplains of the Meuse with the 'new' recreational area Heerenlaak and the historical cores of Aldeneik and Maaseik.
In the village center of Aldeneik, street names, buildings, and monuments take you back to the time when Harlindis and Relindis, daughters of Adelhard and Grinnara, performed all sorts of wonders here. They established a monastic community and received visits from the missionary bishop Willibrordus. In 870, Harlindis and Relindis were canonized. Their relics are still venerated today and celebrated with, among other things, a procession that winds through the streets of Maaseik and Aldeneik every 25 years.
In the center of Maaseik, you can take a break in one of the many eateries in the market and surrounding streets. Furthermore, the walk takes you to the windmill De Hoop in Elen. This historic mill is now a holiday home. Finally, you will also discover the beautiful floodplains of Heppeneert, which, in terms of relief and parcel layout, are the best-preserved floodplains along the Meuse. Here, religion also plays an important role. Heppeneert has been an important pilgrimage site since 1883, where Mary is venerated as Our Lady of Rest. A walking path has recently connected the church with the Meuse. Be sure to take a look, as you will get a beautiful view over the Meuse.
