Schwelentruper Heights Trail

The circular route starting at the bus turning point in Oberdorf von Schwelentrup follows the Old Village Street down, turns right into Krusfelder Weg, and crosses the Hof Pampel with its large poultry flock and the oldest house in Schwelentrup from 1586. The path continues along meadows and pastures, where you can encounter different cattle breeds such as Piemontese or Charolais. Passing the cemetery on the left, you circle around it, keep to the right, and walk through the open field, gradually gaining altitude. Taking the right path, you walk through an old sunken lane, shaped by centuries of use by livestock and wagons cutting into the surrounding terrain. You hike along the edge of the forest until you reach an altitude of 390 m in the forest.
From Steinberg, a former rocket station, you have a magnificent view all the way to the Hermannsdenkmal in the Teutoburg Forest on one side and to the Weser Mountains with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial on the other side. The path then descends to a trail with springs. On the spur of Mühlingsberg lies the impressive rampart of Burg Alt-Sternberg (9th to 11th century). Along the further path, you can expect to see various cattle breeds such as the Rotes Höhenvieh (a livestock breed threatened with extinction) and Piemontese descending into the valley. You then walk relatively flat around the Oberdorf von Schwelentrup with many splendid views of Lipperland and through diverse beech forests, where Galloway cattle graze on scattered pastures during the grazing season. In addition to two shelters, numerous benches invite you to linger.
