Capel Manor House is a glass fronted, small, modern, rectangular shaped, steel-framed private house in Horsmonden, Kent in southern England. It was designed by Michael Manser for John Howard, a former Member of Parliament. It was built between 1969 and 1970. The house was constructed on the site of the remains of an earlier mansion having same name, built by Thomas Henry Wyatt in Italian Gothic style in the mid-nineteenth century and it had been demolished during 1960s. The architectural writer John Newman describes the Manser house as "a severe Miesian pavilion.":307 The colonnades of Wyatt's winter garden now enclose a swimming pool. In 1999, the ownership of the house was purchased by Remy Blumenfeld who assigned Ewan Cameron to design and incorporate a guest house within the arena of the house which was not in the original design of Manser. The house is regarded as an important example of modern architecture in Britain.
The earlier mansion on the ruin of which the present house has been built, was a property of Austen family of kent. Thomas Henry Wyatt built the mansion during 1859-62 for John Francis Austen. The architecture of the house was italic gothic in nature. After the second world war, an army troop used the manor as a base of operation followed by which the mansion was demolished in 1969. Till then the last owner of the house was known to be Frederick Austen.
