Africa Palace

The Africa Palace is a building in Tervuren, Belgium, at the end of avenue de Tervuren at the Park of Tervuren and the AfricaMuseum. On the site of the Africa Palace used to be the summer pavilion of Prince William, in which Charlotte of Mexico stayed for a while. The pavilion burned down on March 3, 1879. The Colonial Palace was built in 1897 by order of Leopold II according to plans by architect Alfred-Philibert Aldrophe to set up the first Congo exhibition. At the back is the truss built by Georges Hobé for the 1897 exhibition. In 1898, it housed the first Musée du Congo, a museum and a scientific institution for the dissemination of colonial propaganda and support for colonial activities in Belgium. It was named the Colonial Museum of Tervuren and moved in 1910 to a new building nearby, where the institution is still located under the name AfricaMuseum. During the renovation operation of the museum in 2018, the 'Colonial Palace' was renamed 'Africa Palace'. It is a banquet hall and event venue.
