The Lijsternest: Streuvelshuis & writers' residence

‘The Lark's Nest’ is the name of the house of writer Stijn Streuvels (1871-1969, real name Frank Lateur). The original house was built in 1905 and is a prime example of Flemish rural architecture. The writer later made some adjustments, such as the creation of the famous window overlooking the fields where his writing desk is located. The writer lived there until his death in 1969. After the death of his wife, it was purchased in 1977 by the province of West Flanders. After many years as a top attraction as a provincial museum, it was completely restored to its former glory by the Province with a renovation and redesign that brings back the appearance to that of the year of Streuvels' death.

A visit to the house takes you back to the time of then and breathes the atmosphere of Streuvels as if he could walk in at any moment. Surrounded by walking and cycling paths, you can enjoy the idyllic atmosphere of nature and outdoor life while experiencing the exceptional cultural experience that a visit to the fully renovated Lark's Nest has become. The Streuvelshuis is open from April 1 to the end of September, every Wednesday to Sunday, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM and from 1 PM to 5 PM. Throughout the afternoon, the garden with picnic tables and the recreational area with reading corner remain open: an ideal setting to spend the afternoon break between cycling or walking through the Land of Streuvels.
During the winter months (from October to April), writers take up residence there to draw inspiration for their own new literary creations. An occasional group visit upon request remains possible.
