The east of Bruges is rich in beautiful natural landscapes. From the bird-rich Assebroekse Meersen, we cycle towards the World Heritage city, where a few mills still remind us of the time when millers supplied the entire city with flour. Over the Dampoort, we search for the outskirts along the Malevelds and cycle through the wooded estate Ryckevelde in Sijsele. It becomes a bit strenuous as we ascend the solitary hill Oedelemberg. Passing by the center of Beernem, we come alongside the Ghent-Bruges Canal, where donkeys graze in the Gevaerts-Noord nature reserve. We cross the wonderfully quiet Beverhoutsveld, where the Bruges residents waged a small battle against the Ghent citizens in the 14th century to return to the Assebroekse Meersen via an old tram route.
