Anyone who has ever been to the northern English city of York knows the Snickelways. They are narrow paths and alleys between the houses. Books have been written about the history of these passages. http://www.amazon.co.uk/A-Walk-Around-Snickelways-York/dp/1871125723
In the Kempen community of Herenthout, we find something similar. What is especially noteworthy is that we can find some of these paths on the Ferraris maps (1771-1778). It is very unusual that these old passages still remain. In many places, they have been claimed by the adjacent owners. Every hiker has experienced this...
This hike takes us along some of these 'Herenthout Snickelways', but also to the Kapellekesboom. It is a centuries-old lime tree at the edge of the forest. Fortunately, there is now a bit more attention given to special trees.
