On the Road with Willem 'Helschot' through the Forest Areas of Fathers and Princes
This day trip lets you get to know the GR 5.
From Westerlo, you travel south of the Great Nete through the extensive forest area of Hertberg. Sandy paths lead you along the edge of the village of Blauberg, where the writer Willem Elsschot often sought peace. On your way to the Averbode Abbey, you cross a unique landscape of ponds, marshes, heathlands, and coniferous forests. After a picnic or an ice cream along the 'Lekdreef' near the abbey, you zigzag again through the nature restoration area north of Averbode. In the valley of the Red Laak, meadows alternate with the moist, wild forests of Helschot and Varenbroek. A bank path along the meandering Great Nete leads you back to Westerlo.
