Welcome to Deurne-Zuid

Deurne is one of the greenest districts in the city. The provincial domain Rivierenhof is located in the middle of it. The area south of it remained very rural. Until the 20th century there were two small residential areas: one along the Herentalsebaan and one near Eksterlaar. From the 16th century, several castle domains were set up. In the middle of the 19th century, a real fortress also appeared, which was part of a belt of seven forts around the Spanish Ramparts. In the meantime, Deurne-Zuid has been almost completely parcelled out and built up. Many castle domains have now disappeared, but there are still many green spots in Deurne-Zuid. And traces of the former Fort Van Deurne can still be found tangible today. The present walk 'Deurne-Zuid in the green' helps you to discover it. And she also introduces you to the ideas from the Deurne Green Plan, in which the city and district together outline opportunities to make Deurne greener.

A Green Plan for Deurne

The city of Antwerp wants to make the greenery on its territory more known and more accessible, and ensure that it does not fragment further. The Green Plan determines where greenery is needed to develop Antwerp into a 'city of tomorrow'. A first step was taken in 2017, with the approval of the city-wide green plan 'Lively Landscape'. This plan mainly focuses on the large robust landscapes in the city. You can explore it yourself via fourteen walks. Now a separate Green Plan is being drawn up for each district, which draws up a green network through the residential areas and thus connects the large landscapes.
