The city of Boppard impresses its guests with its versatility. The steepest vineyard hills and one of the most beautiful riverside promenades of the Middle Rhine, the oldest preserved Roman ramparts north of the Alps, the birthplace of a world-famous chair designer... anyone visiting Boppard can expect a stay full of variety. And in a wonderfully beautiful setting. Boppard has always been a magnet for visitors, not least because of the trendy riverside promenade that invites relaxing strolls. A short walk soon becomes a journey through history. Right by the banks of the Rhine, one passes by the still impressive toll and stronghold of the Trier electors, who controlled the entire Middle Rhine from Boppard. Here, among other things, is the Thonet Museum, where the world-famous café chairs of Boppard's Michael Thonet radiate timeless elegance.
The Roman era has also left its clear marks in Boppard. At the edge of the old town, the walls of the fort Bodobrica, built in 360 AD, still rise 9 meters high. Once, 28 round towers secured the Roman stronghold against the advancing Alemanni and Franks. The remnants can be found in the Archaeological Park of Boppard.
A walk through the wine town of Boppard can suitably conclude in one of the numerous wine houses. Where you can find the Boppard locals in a cozy circle, you don't have to search long on the wine list to find the best wines of the Middle Rhine. Because in the immediate vicinity lies the best location of the wine-growing area. Sunny on the southern side, it stretches in a crescent shape along the great bend in the Rhine. This is about the "Bopparder Hamm." On an area of 75 hectares, predominantly the queen of grape varieties, the Riesling, grows here. The wines of Boppard can be tasted to your heart's content in April, near the town, when the winemakers invite you to the "wine spring on the Middle Rhine." But even in any other season, a walk through the Bopparder Hamm is definitely worthwhile. Besides the magnificent view, the slopes of the steep mountain walls are particularly impressive. Those who are not winemakers may quickly feel a bit dizzy here, but afterward, the wine tastes even better.
