The Berkelroute means: water, nature, and culture in harmony. It also offers a lot of history. It runs through untouched regions and continually takes you back in time. The Berkel springs in Billerbeck, at the foot of the Baumberge. It flows through Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn, and Vreden before reaching the Netherlands. It flows into the IJssel at Zutphen via Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem, and Almen. A worthwhile stop is the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve with its flamingo colony. Are you interested in cultural history during your holiday in the Baumberge? Then it's off to the bell town of Gescher, the pottery town of Stadtlohn, or the Hamaland Museum in Vreden. One community even took its name from the Berkel: Berkelland. Here, village churches, water mills, and other historical buildings invite you to visit.
