Temple of Heracles - Agrigento

The Tempio di Eracle is one of the oldest surviving temples in the Valley of the Temples, dating back to the 6th century BC.

Tempio di Eracle severely damaged and largely in ruins. Nevertheless, it still offers an impressive sight and is a testimony to the ancient architectural grandeur. It is believed to have been destroyed by the Carthaginian general Hannibal in 406 BC during the siege of Akragas.

The temple originally had 6 x 15 columns . The Tempio di Eracle contained inscriptions and carvings in honor of Heracles, as well as images of the hero and his legendary deeds. These images served as a tribute to the divine power of Heracles.

The Tempio di Eracle is so iconic that an image of it can be found on the reverse of the Italian 1 euro cent coin.
