Fortified town of Hulst and its green lungs 22.3 km

A beautiful loop walk of 22.3 km along the forests and creeks in the border region with De Klinge and Stekene. Along the Heikant we trek through the fertile polders around Hulst and enjoy the tour on the impressive city ramp.

The creek and forest area around Hulst is geologically linked to the 'Flemish Plain' that has formed since the last ice age (15,000 years ago). In this very wet, marshy zone, the Durme has played an important role. People looking for waterways for their water transsports have played a role in this: the Moervaart, the Zwin canal, the Stekense vaart. The Stekense sand ridge also dates from that period when the sea level was 150 m lower than today and drifting sand has been able to move undisturbed for centuries over what we now call the mainland. The Loonse and Drunense Duinen near Kaatsheuvel are also an example of this.
