The route goes clockwise and starts at the parking lot along the Old IJssel in Ulft. The route takes you through the Achterhoek. You pass by Castle Slangenburg. Then the route goes through the former moorland around Halle-Heide. The route then heads towards Groenlo and then through the typical hedge landscape of the eastern Achterhoek: rounded fields (called enken or essen), hedgerows, forests, and old farms. You cycle around Winterswijk, over very rural and quiet roads (sometimes cobbled streets), through the neighborhoods of Zwolle (not belonging to Winterswijk) and the neighborhoods of Meddo, Huppel, Ratum, Kotten, Woold, and Miste that belong to Winterswijk.

Then the route heads towards and through Bredevoort, a beautiful former fortified town now known as a book town among other things. The route then goes over the steep edge that has been eroded along the western edge of the East Dutch plateau (near the neighborhoods of Groot-Deunk, Barlo, and Dale). The area here is gently rolling with height differences of up to 15 meters. The route continues to follow rural roads until just before the endpoint in Ulft. All in all, you have only about 6 kilometers of cycle path on the route. The roads are generally quiet, and this is especially true for the area around Winterswijk.
