Nice to Rotheheim

Day trip to Rossum with a beautiful view over the Waal.

This route pleasantly surprised me. A wonderful route for the motorcycle-loving rider.
The route starts in Fijnaart at the Fendertse Hoeve and then goes straight through Brabant to the Gelderland village of Rossum in the Bommelerwaard.

This challenging, yet very beautiful route, mostly goes over back roads with a number of roads unknown to many. Only a few kilometers are on N-roads. A surprising route that includes a few beautiful locks and a water defense. In Rossum, you have a stunning view over the Waal from the terraces by the water.

On weekdays, you ride on very quiet roads. In Udenhout it can be a bit busier with cyclists (around and just after the Loonse- and Drunense dunes). Along the way, there are plenty of places to drink and eat.

Rossum is a village on the southern bank of the river Waal, in the municipality of Maasdriel in the Bommelerwaard in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The village has 2,669 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

The oldest mention of the name Rossum dates back to the year 893. In a deed, Rossum is referred to as 'Rotheheim', a name composed of 'rothe', which refers to a place where forest has been cleared, and 'heim', which means dwelling place. On March 25, 1818, the then municipality of Rossum was granted a municipal coat of arms by the Council of Nobility.
