Lierke pleasure walk

A completely flat 8.5 km long walk that runs for more than half alongside the water and also through a wonderful nature of the Lier city ramparts..
Be sure to pay attention to walk along the correct bank of the various water bodies, otherwise you will unintentionally be rewarded with some extra kilometers until the next bridge over the water.

The center of Lier is surrounded by a completely closed water belt which is very pleasant for walking and cycling in the shade of the trees.

The Kleine and Grote Nete converge east of Lier, and together they form the Nete south of the city.
Right through the old center of Lier flows the Binnennete, a medieval arm of the Nete, which now creates a pleasant and calming atmosphere in the city center.

North of the city is the Afleidingsvaart, which was once part of the medieval defense belt, and now forms the green Lier city ramparts.
The walk runs along all these Nete arms and city ramparts in a green, almost car-free environment.

And just over a kilometer south of the center flows the Netekanaal, which can process all Nete water in principle.
Thanks to an ingenious lock system, the water level in the various Nete arms can be regulated.
This ensures that there is always gently flowing water visible in the Nete arms.
The fluctuating water masses are caught by the Netekanaal, so the Nete arms never have to process too much water.

The walk can start at the paid spacious car park just south of the historic center, but can also just as well start at the train station of Lier to the northwest of the city.

Lier certainly does not lack historic buildings.
For example, there is the Sint-Gummaruskerk with a beautiful octagonal tower and inside the unique 16th-century organ loft that separates the choir from the nave of the church.
The Zimmertoren with a large collection of timepieces is also definitely worth a visit.
And you should certainly not overlook the stately town hall with its belfry tower.

After the walk, you can relax with a drink and/or a snack at the Zimmerplein with many nice restaurants and car-free terraces.
