The Abbey Route of Leuven

Halfway through the bike ride in Leuven, we bike past three of the four Leuven abbeys.
First past the Abbey of Vlierbeek, then the Keizersberg Abbey situated on a hill, and finally past the Abbey of Park with its beautiful fish ponds.
The fourth Leuven abbey, the Saint Gertrude Abbey, is deliberately not included in the bike route.
This is mainly to avoid the crowds of Leuven's city center on one hand.
And on the other hand, because biking is not allowed in this abbey complex (it is possible to walk).

The elevated Keizersberg Abbey and its publicly accessible domain is surrounded by a long high wall, reminiscent of a fortified castle.
From the garden, now a public city park, you have a beautiful panorama over the entire city of Leuven.
By bike, the Keizersberg Abbey can only be reached along the Mechelsesteenweg.
To do this, leave the bike path to go along the Mechelsesteenweg through the tunnel under the R23 (Ring around Leuven) and then immediately turn left uphill to the abbey buildings.
On foot, with a series of steps, there are still a few other entrances to the abbey complex possible.

There are indeed some unpaved (1.7 km), gravel (1.4 km), and cobbled sections (4.3 km) in the route.
