City walk Lucca - Tuscany

Free parking on Via delle Tagliate Terza.

This still completely walled city is a gem that no one should miss. The city walls have been completely preserved and a strip of greenery has been provided on the outside so that the whole comes into its own. A wide path for pedestrians and cyclists runs on top of the fortress walls, with a nice overview of the surroundings and the city centre .

We start on the outside to get a good view of the ramparts. Through the tunnels of the 'Baluardo San Martino' we enter the city.

The intention is to visit all the sights, but also to walk part of the city wall.

Soon we arrive at the famous Torre Guinigi with its roof of trees.

We pass the botanical garden (definitely worth a visit for enthusiasts!) and arrive at the cathedral Duomo di San Martino.

Via the Piazza Napoleone we arrive at the church of San Michele in Foro with its richly carved facade made of all kinds of marble, one of the most beautiful churches in Tuscany.

Of course we pass a statue of the composer Puccini who was born here.

We now head towards Porta San Pietro , one of the six entrance gates, to continue the walk on the ramparts for one and a half kilometers.

Via the Palazzo Pfanner, famous for its inner garden, we reach the Basilica di San Frediano, one of the most visited churches in the city.

We reach the famous former Roman Amphitheater 'Piazza dell'Anfiteatro'.

For those who can handle it: be sure to try the quaint Trattiria Ubaldo near the Piazza Del'Anfiteatro!

Via the 'Porta dei Borghi' we leave the city center again.
