The Gallo-Roman period 1
Andenne has not been able to avoid the Romanization as it was situated in the heart of the Provincia Belgica (capital: Trier) between 2 Roman roads linking Köln to Bavay: the main one in the north through Hesbaye and the second through Condroz passing near Ciney and Dinant. The road that linked both crossed the river Meuse over a bridge built in Andenelle. This geographical situation is in close relation with the development of the Roman occupation in Andenne at this period. (See map)
In 1912, at the outskirts of the town, a Roman cemetery of the 2nd century was discovered. It contained 75 tombs. In the corner of the showcase you can see different pieces of pottery that were discovered during the excavations
In the showcase on the right you can see the scale model of a simple Roman oven and of an industrial one. This kind of oven, some 10 meters high, was built up with 3 different elements: plates, discs and pipes distributing the heath. They were used to fire the ceramics in “terra sigilata”.
Most of the shown objects were found in a villa in Evelette at 15 km from Andenne during excavations made in 1961-62.
